Overtonium / Presets

Presets

Sixteen ship with the plugin. All but a handful were dialled in on the panel and converted straight from the saved file, so what ships is what was played rather than something written afterwards to approximate it.

What ships

Big Saw, Cathedral, Drawbar Organ, Equal Saw, Glass Armonica, Init, Just Saw, Lo-fi, Music Box, Odd Harmonics, Shimmer, Slow Pad, Struck Bell, Tape Choir, Vibraphone and Wurli.

A few are worth opening up rather than only playing, because each one demonstrates a control that is hard to describe:

Preset What it shows
Just Saw and Equal Saw Identical patches except for TUNE. The clearest demonstration of what the control does, and they sound nothing alike
Drawbar Organ The key-off stage used as a release click. The upper drawbars jump to 55% for two milliseconds as the contacts break
Struck Bell and Odd Harmonics Per-partial velocity, with the fundamental flat and the upper partials steep, so playing harder opens the tone rather than only raising it
Slow Pad and Shimmer Staggered envelope delays, so the spectrum unfolds rather than arriving at once, and mirrored pans across the series
Init The neutral starting point. It clears the patch and leaves the session alone

What a preset carries

The patch and nothing else. Loading one never moves your master fader, your temperament, your reference pitch, your window size or your LINK settings. Those are properties of the session you are working in rather than of any one sound in it, and having a patch drag you back to equal temperament in the middle of a piece would be no help.

That includes Init. It is still a preset, so it clears the patch and leaves the session where you set it.

Values are stored plain rather than normalised, so a preset survives a parameter's range being widened later, and anything a file does not mention keeps its default rather than being reset.

Saving your own

Saving writes one small file per preset, and the menu reads that folder every time it opens, so a preset added from outside the plugin shows up without a restart. The folder is created on demand.

Platform Where they live
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Dehli Musikk/Overtonium/Presets
Windows %APPDATA%\Dehli Musikk\Overtonium\Presets
Linux ~/.config/Dehli Musikk/Overtonium/Presets

They are small XML files holding parameter values, so they can be read, edited, kept under version control and passed to someone else by copying the file. The menu sorts by name rather than by whatever order the filesystem hands them back.
